HARROGATE could lay claim to an Olympic medal winner on Sunday, when Harrogate-born rower Debbie Flood sets out to contest the Women's quadruple sculls final at China's Shunyi Rowing Park.
Flood, 28, was a resident of Guiseley before moving to Henley-on-Thames.
Sitting at number two in the boat, Flood, Frances Houghton, Katherine Grainger and Annie Vernon finished fastest in their heat on Sunday, making the final and avoiding a tough midweek repechage.
Flood suffered a cut knuckle during the race, but played it down afterwards and said it will not affect her in Sunday’s final.
Great Britain are up against a highly-competitive Chinese team and a formidable German side, who Britain defeated in the heat to become the first ever side to beat Germany in this Olympic event.
